May 1 to be a "Day Without Latinos"
Thursday, May 1 will be Milwaukee's third annual "Day Without Latinos" as thousands of activists march for comprehensive immigration reform. The local May Day march is just one of more than 75 across the country on this same date to promote immigrant rights.
According to Voces de la Frontera, the group organizing the march, between 80,000-95,000 people marched in the streets of Milwaukee in 2007, making it one of the largest in the country, and the only to draw more attendance than the previous year. This year the groups messages will also spread beyond immigration reform to address the needs of all low-income workers, including calls for: stopping the raids and separation of families, just legalization, access to drivers licenses, stopping Social Security No Match letters, fair international trade agreements for workers, good jobs and health care for all, and end to the war in Iraq.
Marchers will meet at Voces de la Frontera, 1027 S. 5th St. at 9:30 a.m. A youth rally will follow at 10:30 a.m.
