The Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP) is working under new income guidelines this year making a greater number of households eligible for energy assistance. This means that Milwaukee families with incomes at or below 60% of the state medium income -- $47,485.00 for a family of four during the 2013-2014 heating season -- may qualify for energy assistance to help pay their energy bills.

For details or to learn where to apply visit www.homeenergyplus.wi.gov or call 1-866-HEATWIS (432-8947). Customers are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

WHEAP assistance offers a one-time payment during the heating season (October 1-May 15). The funding pays a portion of the heating costs, but is not intended to cover the entire cost of heating a residence. This assistance can also aid in paying for non-heating electric costs. This is also a one-time benefit payment during the heating season (October 1-May 15).

Qualification for energy assistance is not based on whether someone is behind on their energy bills or whether they rent or own their home. The benefit amount is determined by factors such as household income, annual energy usage, household size and type of housing unit.

Applicants must bring the following items to the energy assistance agencies to determine eligibility:

  • Proof of income for all household members 18 years or older for the previous three months
  • Social Security cards for everyone in the household
  • Current energy bill

Note: If the applicant is a renter and heat is included, a rent certificate or statement from the landlord confirming that heat is included in rent payments.
