The holidays are supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year. So why does it have to cost so much? It doesn't! If you think that free things are wonderful, then these free holiday events in Milwaukee should be tops on your list of things to do this season.
Take the Polar Bear Plunge
Every year, on New Year's Day, a crowd of insane people descend on Milwaukee's Bradford Beach at noon to jump into the frigid waters of Lake Michigan. Why? There are a multitude of reasons: to cleanse the spirit for the new year, to shock away last night's hangover, or to wear a bikini and pretend it's 70 degrees warmer than it really is.
Drive Down Candy Cane Lane
Nearly everyone who lives in the Milwaukee area has heard of Candy Cane Lane, an area of several city blocks just north of Oklahoma Avenue in West Allis where residents bring the tradition of stringing Christmas lights to a whole new level. More than 300 homes participate in event, and the fun runs from November 25 to December 26.
Ice Skate at Red Arrow Park
Milwaukee's downtown skating rink, the Slice of Ice in Red Arrow Park, is a great place to work off some excess holiday calories. Ice skates may be rented for $8 per pair, or skaters with their own skates can skate for free. Red Arrow Park is located at 920 N. Water St.
See the Downtown Holiday Lights
Spectacular lights adorn many a tree and building in downtown Milwaukee during the holidays, but not everyone knows all of the "hot" spots. These are the can't-miss displays, plus a sure-fire way to see them without getting a cold nip on the nose.
