The Milwaukee Art Museum's newest exhibit Foto: Modernity in Central Europe, 1918-1945 is an exploration of photographs produced in Germany, Austria, the former Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary as a response to the rapid changes in society between World War I and World War II.

Divided into eight categories, with telling titles such as The Cut-and-Paste World: Recovering From War, Land Without a Name and New Women - New Men, the works in the exhibit employ a wide array of innovative techniques that broke new ground for the photographic arts, yet remained overlooked by art historians until now.
