About the Upper East Side
The Upper East Side neighborhood of Milwaukee is a small section of the larger East Side neighborhood, known for its high density of students and wealthier families. Many residents of Milwaukee do not designate between the Upper East Side and Lower East Side, and consider the East Side to be an area that stretches roughly from Lake Michigan on the east, to the river on the west, to Capital Drive on the north, and Ogden Avenue on the south.

It's not uncommon for a local, particularly those who live in other sections of the city, to refer to the "fashionable" East Side, sometimes with a tone of irony. It's certainly one of a few pockets of the city that really don't fit with the suburban sprawl that comprises much of the rest of Milwaukee. Likewise many denizens of this area, probably because of the higher population of college students and young residents from other cities, do not know much about the city beyond the borders of this neighborhood.

As a whole, the East Side contains a few of the hottest commercial stretches in the city, making it a popular night life destination. Brady Street is a well-known are for shopping and nightlife, as is North Avenue, once mostly a stretch of college-friendly bars, but gradually becoming a popular shopping district as well.

The upper East Side is largely residential, although the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee lies one block to its north, and Oakland Avenue, which makes up the neighborhood's western border, is also a lively commercial thoroughfare. This proximity to campus and nightlife creates an ongoing battle between area homeowners and the constant rotation of college students, who, experiencing life on their own for the first time, are often forgetful when it comes to practicing neighborly etiquette. With the housing stock an almost perfect split between single and multi-families, it doesn't look as if either side will be getting ahead any time soon.
